Entries are now open for the 2026 Pukemiro Station Cadetship Tararua Shepherd of the Year.

The Aim.

This competition aims to highlight and support career growth within the sheep and beef industry. We’re seeking motivated, passionate shepherds who are driven to develop and excel.

Criteria.

  • The competition is open to Shepherds between 19 and 27 years of age (on 1st April 2026) and currently working on a sheep and beef farm in the Tararua Region.

  • The term “Shepherd” also includes Head Shepherd and Shepherd General, but NOT Stock Manager or Manager who makes management decisions.

  • An on-farm judging day will be held in mid - late March where you be assessed via a mix of practical challenges and an interview. Judges will review your CV, entry form and may complete reference checks. 

  • The organising committee has full discretion on the eligibility of entry on a case-by-case basis
